Week 18/2008
EISS carries out active influenza surveillance from week 40 to week 20 of the following year. During the rest of the year, a number of surveillance networks continue to report data to EISS and therefore appear on the map.

The EISS project receives funding from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Neither ECDC, nor any person acting on its behalf is liable for any use made of the information published here.

The EISS co-ordination centre is based at NIVEL.

Welcome to the website of the
European Influenza Surveillance Scheme (EISS)

EISS aims to contribute to a reduction in morbidity and mortality due to
influenza in Europe

EISS helps reduce the burden of disease associated with influenza in Europe by collecting and exchanging timely information on influenza activity, contributing to the annual determination of the influenza vaccine content, providing relevant information about influenza to health professionals and the general public and contributing to European influenza pandemic preparedness activities.

Twenty-six European Union Member States, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and Ukraine participate in EISS. The United Kingdom is represented by four surveillance networks: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

EISS publishes a weekly surveillance report on influenza activity in 30 countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Scotland, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales. The surveillance reports are based on data reported by 25,750 sentinel physicians and cover a total population of 498 million inhabitants.

EISS also operates the Community Network of Reference Laboratories for Human Influenza. This network includes 38 reference laboratories in all of the countries participating in EISS.
