Virology Task Groups

Virology Task Groups are being implemented to harmonise and standardise CNRL testing capabilities and have been set up around the following themes:

1. Virus isolation
2. Antibodies
3. Molecular virology
4. Quality Control Assessment
5. Antiviral susceptibility testing

Virus isolation.

Tasks include testing batches of cell lines (the main cell line used is MDCK), appointment of a bank holder and distributor of cell lines, standardisation of procedures for isolation of virus by cell culture or in eggs and recommendations on biosafety issues.

Antibodies.

Tasks include standardisation of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies for ELISA and immunofluorescence, harmonisation of the criteria for designation of the dominant (sub)type on the EISS website/bulletin, harmonisation and standardisation of influenza serology and standardisation of hemagglutination (inhibition) assays by:

  • testing of red blood cells
  • preparation of (ferret) sera
  • appointment of a bank holder and distributor of (ferret) sera and reference viruses.

Molecular virology.

Tasks include plasmid and cDNA creation for hemagglutinin and neuraminidase genes, appointment of a bank holder and distributor of plasmids, cDNA and RNA, sequencing of vaccine, prototype and early strains and development of a sequence database.

Quality Control Assessment.

Organisation, preparation, shipment and analysis of results of quality control panels and organisation of follow-up procedures.

Implementation and standardisation of antiviral susceptibility surveillance.
