  New information received from 26 European countries.  
Low influenza activity across the European continent. Type A is dominant, mainly A(H1N1).

AUSTRIA** No influenza acitivity Weeks 20/50 to 20/51 28/12/00
BELGIUM** Influenza activity is globally low inspite of ongoing isolations/detections ofinfluenza A(H1N1) viruses.
1st case of virologically confirmed influenza B

BULGARIA ARI at seasonal levels. First isolation of influenza virus from a sporadic case. The strain has been characterised
as antigenically related to A/Moscow/10/99(H3N2)

CZECH REPUBLIC** Sporadic Influenza activity. Three antigen detections of influenza A virus are reported Week 20/50 14/12/00
DENMARK** Sporadic Influenza activity. One A/NC/20/99(H1N1) -like and one A/Moscow/10/99(H3N2)-like isolates are reported
for weeks 20/52 and 20/51 respectively

FINLAND** Sporadic influenza activity with alocal outbreak in Turku. 6specimens are reported to be positive forinfluenza A by antigen detection Week 20/52 08/01/01
FRANCE** Influenza activity was qualified as epidemic in eight regions and local in 13 regions. A/NC/20/99(H1N1)-like isolates are reported. Week 01/21 10/01/01
GERMANY** Influenza activity associated with influenza A/NC/20/99(H1N1)-like viruses reached local to regional levels. Influenza acitivity is globally low Week 01/21
GREECE** Low influenza activity. No detection/isolation of influenza virus reported so far. Week 01/21 04/01/01
HUNGARY No report so far  
ICELAND** Two virologically confirmed cases of influenza A during weeks 20/51 and 01/01.Influenza activity is sporadic. Weeks 20/51 to 21/01 09/01/01
IRELAND** Low sporadic influenza activity. Both A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) isolates are reported Weeks 20/50 to 21/01 10/01/01
ITALY** Influenza activity at low levels. Influenza A(H1N1) virus detections/isolations are reported for weeks 20/52
and 21/01 from hospitalised patients

LATVIA** Low influenza activity. First reports ofinfluenza virus detections/isolations. Weeks 20/52 to 21/02 15/01/01
LITHUANIA** Influenza activity at non epidemic levels. Virologically confirmed cases Influenza A are reported Weeks 20/52 to 21/01 08/01/01
THE NETHERLANDS** Sporadic influenza activity due to influenza A viruses. Week 21/01 10/01/01
NORWAY** Sporadic but slightly increasing influenza activity. No detection/isolation reported for this period of thime. Weeks 20/51 to 21/01 10 & 11/01/01
POLAND** Influenza activity at seasonal levels with low incidence of ILI. No detection nor isolation are reported Week 21/01
PORTUGAL** Both A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) isolates are reported for weeks 20/51 and 20/52 respectively Weeks 20/51 and 20/52
ROMANIA** ARI at non epidemic level.No detection nor isolation of influenza virus are reported Weeks 20/51 to 21/01 11/01/01
RUSSIA and CIS c.** During weeks 20/49 and 20/50influenza activity was globally low with local outbreaks. Influenza A(H3N2), A(H1N1) & B viruses have been deteceted during December 2000. Weeks 20/49 and 20/50 21/12/00
SLOVAK REPUBLIC** Sporadic Influenza activity with some local outbreaks in the south-west part of the country. Three new isolates antigenically related to A/NC/20/99 are reported Week 21/01 11/01/01
SLOVENIA** No influenza activity Weeks 20/51 and 21/01
SPAIN** Sporadic influenza activity Weeks 20/50 to 21/01
SWEDEN** Sporadic influenza activity Weeks 20/50 to 21/01
SWITZERLAND** Spoardic influenza activity associated with occasionnal detections/isolations of influenza viruses.
So far, the predominant type is A and sutype is H1N1

UNITED KINGDOM** Although influenza activity remains at low levels, clinical indicators have increased slightly during week 21/01 Week 21/01 10/01/01

Elsewhere in the world    
USA** Widespread influenza activity is reported by 2 states and territorial health departments (Rhodes Island and Virginia) whereas regional or sporadic activity is reported respectively by 11 and 35 states and territorial health departments. Two othersdid not report.During week 21/01, 138 (12%) specimens are found positive: 20 are influenza A(H1N1), 2 are a(H3N2), 88 are type A not subtyped and 28 are influenza B viruses.  Week 21/01 12/01/01
