  New information received from 25 European countries.  
Low influenza activity across the European continent except in Francewhere it reached local to regional levels. Type A is dominant, mainly A(H1N1) but some countries reported the isolation of A(H3N2) viruses.

FRANCE** Influenza activity has reached the epidemic threshold in 2 regions of Northern France due to A/NC/20/99(H1N1)-like viruses. The activity was reported as local in the South andregional in the North. Two isolations of A(H3N2) viruses in the South. Week 20/49 13/12/00
GERMANY** Sporadic influenza activity associated with influenza A(H1N1) viruses Week 20/49 14/12/00

NORWAY** Sporadic influenza activity.First virological detection of influenza virus reported for week 48.
RT-PCR and sequencing showed the strain to belong to the A(H1N1) subtype and genetically related to A/NC/20/99.

USA** Regional influenza activity was reported by 5 states and territorial health departments whereas sporadic activity was reported by 31. Thirteen othersreported no influenza activity.
During week 49, 51 (6%) specimens were found positive: 33 were influenza A(H1N1) viruses, 6 were unsubtyped A viruses, and 12 wereB viruses.
