  New information received from 19 European countries.  
Sporadic influenza activity in some European countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain and Spain.
During weeks 20/46 & 20/47, influenza A(H1N1) was the dominant type/subtype.

AUSTRIA No report so far  
BELGIUM** Sporadic influenza activity. Since week 43, influenza A viruses are detected every week. So far, 13 antigen detections were positive for influenza A including 5 for week 47 Weeks 20/46 to 20/47 26/11/00
BULGARIA No report so far  
CROATIA** No influenza activity. No detection nor isolation so far Week 20/48 29/11/00
CZECH REPUBLIC** Increasing ARI levels but influenza activity is still within baseline levels. One influenza B virus detection in Prague Weeks 20/46 to 20/48 30/11/00
DENMARK** Influenza activity is at baseline levels Week 20/47 29/11/00
FINLAND** Sporadic influenza activity. On top on theinfluenza A(H1N1)isolate(week 20/46) & one antigen
detection of influenza B virus (between weeks 20/41 & 20/46) reported in last issue, 7 more antigen detections of A virus reported for week 46.
Week 20/46 & 20/47 26/11/00
FRANCE** Sporadic influenza activity. 4 influenza A isolates were reported for weeks 46 & 47 from the sentinel network (3) and from hospitals (1). All of them were characterised as A(H1N1). Weeks 20/46 to 20/47 30/11/00
GERMANY** ARI at seasonal level. The first influenza virus in Germany was isolated from a 4-year old boy with pneumonia living in Berlin. Isolate characterised as A(H1N1). Weeks 20/46 to 20/47 22 & 30/11/00
GREAT BRITAIN** Influenza activity within baseline levels. 6 Influenza A detections/isolations reported in England for
week 47. To date five isolates of influenza A (H1N1) have been characterised, 4 were antigenically similar to A/NC/20/99, and one was antigenically similar to A/Bayern/7/95

SLOVAK REPUBLIC** Influenza activity at seasonal levels. The first influenza isolate (week 20/44) announced in the previous
EuroGROG Bulletin has been characterised as an influenza B virus.

RUSSIA and CIS c. During the third quarter of year 2000, low influenza activity with sporadic
cases of influenza A(H3N2), A(H1N1) & B

Elsewhere in the world    
USA Sporadic influenza activity was reported by 20 States whereas 30 reported no activity.
So far among 56 identified isolates, the predominant type is A (88%), among which 95% belong to the A(H1N1) subtype.
