EuroGROG Bulletin 5 - Week 2002/03 to 2002/06

New information processed for 25 European countries.

Overall increase of Influenza activity across Europe. Between week 04 and 06, influenza activity was widespread, at least during one week, in Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland and Norway. A(H3N2) viruses were globally dominant although influenza B viruses circulated at significant levels. Two noteworthy virological data: 1/ the circulation of reassortant A(H1N2) viruses in Israël, Egypt, Europe and the United States; 2/ the detection of Victoria-like B viruses in Italy and the Netherlands.

Comments Period
Austria No evidence of influenza activity in Austria. No detection nor isolation so far. Week 01/50
Belgium ** ARI levels were above the epidemic threshold and Influenza activity was reported as widespread in the country. The peak was reached during week 02/04. A was the dominant type but the number of isolations/detections of B viruses was increasing. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 14/02/02
Belarus ** Increasing ILI levels with influenza activity confirmed by antigen detections of influenza A and B viruses. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 12/02/02
Bulgaria ** Sporadic influenza activity. No detection nor isolation so far.
Croatia ** Influenza activity confirmed by the first antigen detections of influenza A and B viruses during week 02/05. More A and B viruses were detected or isolated during week 02/06. Among them, type B is slightly dominant. B viruses were found to be antigenically related to B/SIchuan/379/99 and the A viruses were shown to cross react well with anti-A/N Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) serum. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 11/02/02
Czech Republic ** Moderate influenza activity with virologically confirmed influenza A and B infections reported every week since week 02/04 to 02/06. So far 4 A(H3N2) isolates were reported. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 14/02/02
Denmark ** Sporadic Influenza activity due to Influenza A(H3N2) viruses. The isolated strains from weeks 3, 4 and 5 were characterised as A/Moscow/10/99 like viruses Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 13/02/02
Finland ** Seasonal influenza activity with local outbreaks of A and B cases. Dominant virus type is A. The isolates which were subtyped were characterised as A(H3N2). Weeks 02/04 to 02/05
France ** Decreasing influenza activity, mainly due to A(H3N2) influenza viruses, was reported as epidemic in all the regions. Influenza B viruses were active and three H1 isolates were reported weeks 02/04 and 02/05, among which one was H1N1 and 2 were H1N2. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 13/02/02
Germany ** ARI activity reached regional levels. Influenza activity due to both A(H3N2) and B viruses. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 13/02/02
Greece No report so far
Hungary ** Influenza activity at non epidemic levels. No detection nor isolation reported for the period. Weeks 02/04 to 02/05 08/02/02
Iceland ** No evidence of influenza activity in Iceland. No detection nor isolation so far. Weeks 01/40 to 02/01 10/01/02
Ireland ** Sporadic influenza activity due to influenza A viruses. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Italy ** Influenza activity peaking at widespread levels. Activity mainly due to influenza B viruses. Some Italian B isolates were found to belong to the "old" B/Victoria/2/87 lineage. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 14/02/02
Latvia ** Influenza activity reached local levels. For week 02/06, 14 virus A and 5 virus B antigen detections were reported as well as influenza A(H3N2) and B isolates. Influenza A strains were found antigenically related to A/Moscow/10/99(H3N2) whereas the B strains showed reduced cross reactivity with B/SIchuan/379/99. Weeks 02/04 and 02/06 13/02/02
Lithuania ** Increasing ARI and influenza activity reaching epidemic levels in 3 out 52 districts during week 02/05. Influenza A and B viruses detected by IF. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 12/02/02
The Netherlands ** Increased influenza activity reaching regional levels, mainly due to type A. It is noteworthy that at least one Dutch isolate was reported to belong to the "old" B/Victoria/2/87 lineage. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Norway ** Increased influenza activity reaching widespread levels. Activity mainly due to A(H3N2) viruses. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Poland ** Influenza activity at seasonal levels. No detection nor isolation so far. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 11/02/02
Portugal ** Widespread influenza activity due to Influenza A(H3N2) viruses. Sporadic detections of B viruses (week 02/06). Weeks 02/01 to 02/03 23/01/02
Romania ** Increasing ARI levels mainly due to A(H3N2) viruses. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Russia and CIS ** Influenza activity was epidemic in the third of Russian regions whereas the epidemic was over in some cities such as Barnaul, Perm, Kazan and Krasnodar. The activity was mainly due to Influenza A(H3N2) and B viruses. A(H1N1) viruses were spotted but less frequently. Weeks 02/03 to 02/06 15/02/02
Slovak Republic ** Sporadic influenza activity due to type B viruses. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Slovenia ** Low influenza activity with sporadic cases of virologically confirmed influenza B. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06 14/02/02
Spain ** Influenza activity peaked during week 02/05. It was still widespread, mainly due to influenza A(H3N2). B viruses were also active. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Sweden ** Increasing influenza activity reaching regional levels. Weeks 02/04 and 02/06
Switzerland ** Widespread influenza activity mainly due to type B viruses. Influenza A(H3N2) were also frequently detected or isolated during the period. Weeks 02/04 to 02/06
Great Britain ** Low and sporadic influenza activity due to both influenza A (H3N2) and influenza A (H1) viruses. In the area covered by EuroGROG, A (H1N2) viruses were first reported in England and Scotland. Weeks 02/03 to 02/06
Yugoslavia New EuroGROG member. No report so far.
Elsewhere in the world
USA ** Widespread influenza activity was reported by 9 States and territorial health departments, regional activity was reported by 21 States. Twenty states reported sporadic activity. The predominant type is A (99%). So far: 99% of subtyped A isolates were A(H3N2) whereas 1% were H1 viruses. Among the latter, one A(H1N2) was isolated in Wisconsin in December 2001. Week 02/05 08/02/02
