EuroGROG Bulletin 4 - Week 2002/01 to 2002/03

New information processed for 26 European countries.

Overall increase of Influenza activity across Europe. It was reported as widespread in France, Spain and Belgium while it was described as regional in Switzerland. In the rest of Europe, influenza activity was either local, sporadic or none. Influenza A(H3N2) isolates were globally dominant, although influenza B viruses were very active in some countries, even dominant sometimes. A(H1N1) viruses were also spotted in various countries.

Comments Period
Austria No evidence of influenza activity in Austria. No detection nor isolation so far. Week 01/50
Belgium ** ARI levels were above the epidemic threshold and Influenza activity was reported as widespread in the country. Number of laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A still Increasing. A was the domoninant type. Sporadic isolations/detections of B viruses. Weeks 02/02 to 02/03 25/01/02
Belarus ** No sign of influenza activity. 24/01/2002
Bulgaria ** Sporadic influenza activity. No detection nor isolation so far. 18/01/2002
Croatia ** No indication of influenza activity. No detection nor isolation so far. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 25/01/02
Czech Republic ** Low influenza activity with rare virologically confirmed influenza A and B infections. First A(H3N2) isolate (week 02/04) reported 25/01/02. Weeks 02/02 and 02/04 21/01/02
Denmark ** Influenza activity at seasonal levels. First report of the detection / isolation of influenza A virus (week 02/03). Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 24/01/02
Finland ** Seasonal influenza activity with sporadic A and B cases. Two isolates antigenically related to the vaccine strain A/Panama/2007/99(H3N2) were reported for this period. Weeks 02/01 to 02/03 23/01/02
France ** Increasing influenza activity, mainly due to A(H3N2) influenza viruses, was reported as epidemic in all the regions. Influenza B viruses were active and the two first A(H1N1) isolates were reported in January 02. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 23/01/02
Germany ** ARI activity above expected levels. Sporadic isolations / detection of influenza viruses mainly belonging to type B. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 24/01/02
Greece No report so far

Ireland ** Sporadic influenza activity. First isolations/ detections of influenza viruses since week 2001/40. They come from the sentinel scheme: all influenza viruses belong to type A, one has been subtyped as H3N2. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 23/01/02
Italy ** Increasing influenza activity with increasing number of laboratory confirmed cases of influenza B. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 24/01/02
Latvia ** Low sporadic influenza activity. First influenza virus detection by antigen detection during week 02/02. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 24/01/02
Lithuania ** Increasing ARI and influenza activity but still at non epidemic levels. No new detection nor new isolation reported for this period. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 21/01/02
The Netherlands ** Influenza activity at low levels. No new detection/ isolation of influenza virus during this period. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03
Norway ** Increasing influenza activity, yet at a sporadic level, in the southeast, with mid- and northern Norway. Influenza activity due to A(H3N2) viruses. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 23/01/02
Poland ** Influenza activity at seasonal levels. No detection nor isolation so far. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 24/01/02
Portugal ** Moderate influenza activity due to Influenza A(H3N2) viruses. Weeks 02/01 to 02/03 23/01/02
Romania ** ARI morbidity is at seasonal non epidemic level in all the country. No isolation since week 01/50. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03
Russia and CIS ** Influenza activity exceeded epidemic threshold in the Russian cities of Barnaul, Perm, Cheyabinsk, Kazan, Astrakhan, Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod. In the rest of the country, influenza activity was within seasonal levels. Influenza A(H3N2) and B were detected/ isolated. Weeks 02/01 and 02/02 21/01/02
Slovak Republic ** No indication of influenza activity. No detection nor isolation so far. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03
Slovenia ** Low influenza activity with sporadic cases of virologically confirmed influenza B. Week 02/03
Spain ** Increasing influenza activity since week 01/51, mainly due to influenza A(H3N2). The activity is widespread across the country. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03
Sweden ** Sporadic influenza activity. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03
Switzerland ** Increasing influenza activity, reaching epidemic thresholds in various regions. Detections / isolations of influenza A and B viruses have sharply increased during this period. Weeks 02/02 and 02/03 23/01/02
Great Britain ** Influenza activity at low levels with increasing but still sporadic detections/isolations of influenza A viruses reported in England where the A(H1N1) subtype is well represented as compared with the reports from the rest of Europe. Weeks 02/02 to 02/04 23/01/02
